During the next three weeks Labour Party members will be asked to vote for the person whom they wish to take over the leadership and become Gordon Brown’s successor.
The process to select the new leader has now got underway as ballot papers were dispatched to members of socialist societies, Labour members and trade unionists across the country.
The timing of the ballot has been carefully planned so that the winner can be announced on the 25th September which will be just prior to the annual conference held by the Labour Party.
Stepping up as contestants to be selected as the next Labour Party leader are five MPs that include Andy Burnham, Ed Balls, the brothers David and Ed Miliband who were former cabinet ministers and Diane Abbott who is a back bencher.
All five will be fighting to secure the Labour Party leadership position that was created when former leader Gordon Brown stepped down after the last general election.
It is envisaged that the candidates will be making every effort to convey their message to the voting Labour followers this week as ballot papers are due to be received from Wednesday onwards and expectations are that there will be substantial votes cast in the next few days.
